Buet closed sine die after 'attack'
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has been closed for sine die after “attack and vandalism” on its academic buildings.
Students have been asked to vacate campus premises by 5:00pm today, an emergency notice put out by the authorities this afternoon said.
Authorities blamed the attack on a group of students who had besieged the offices of Buet’s vice-chancellor, registrar and students’ welfare director on June 23 demanding postponement of term final examinations.
A press release issued in this regard, signed by Buet’s Registrar AKM Masud, said the students vandalised some academic buildings and set them on fire last night.
The protesters, mainly of 2009 batch, demanded the authorities to take the terminal examinations after Eid vacation instead of scheduled June 27, one of the students said.
