Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate officials today seized a container carrying Indian currency at Chittagong port.

Acting on secret information, the officials detected a 20-feet container at yard No. 8 of Chittagong port around 6:00pm, said Dr Moinul Khan, director general of the directorate.

Later, they opened the container in front of C&F agent staff. After examining several cartons of the container, Indian currency kept at hidden chambers were recovered from four cartons, the official said.

The container will remain sealed for tonight, and other cartons will be examined in front of high officials of different departments including Chittagong Customs House and Chittagong Port Authority tomorrow morning, he added.

Talking to The Daily Star, Moinul also said officials were suspecting that the currencies might be fake.

Meanwhile, National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Nojibur Rahman, who is currently in Chittagong, is scheduled to inspect the container tonight, said custom officials.

The container, carrying unaccompanied baggage of household goods, was brought from Dubai, said Syed Mokaddes Hossain, assistant director of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate, Chittagong.
