Destroy breeding grounds of Aedes: Kolkata deputy mayor
Kolkata Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh today suggested the Dhaka north city mayor to put importance in destroying the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquito instead of using insecticides to this end.
“There is no alternative but to destroy the breeding ground and build up public awareness to control of the mosquito outbreak,” Atin Ghosh said in a video conference with Dhaka North City Mayor Atiqul Islam this noon.
Alongside this, he also underscored the need for social movement and political willingness to control the population of the mosquito.
Though the use of fogger machine is effective in controlling the Culex mosquito, its effectiveness in preventing the Aedes mosquito is low, said Atin Ghosh also acting panel mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
During the video conference, Atin Ghosh shared his own experience in controlling the mosquito outbreak in his municipality and suggested that the mosquito-prone area in Dhaka will have to be detected first and then the strategies as needed will have to be undertaken.
He said the amount of punishment has been increased through reforming the related law and thus the people have become more aware than the past in preventing the mosquito outbreak.
The KMC has carried out infrastructure-based fight for round nine years and then reached the present situation, the KCC deputy mayor said.
The authority of the KMC has been conducting three-tier monitoring activities at ward, bureau and headquarter levels since the 2009 and become able to control the population of the Aedes mosquito, the carrier of the deadly disease dengue, he said.
