Dhaka cleaned in 27hrs: Annisul

Dhaka was cleaned of wastes from the sacrificial animals within 27 hours, North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Haque claimed today.

“The post-Eid clean-up proves how easy the task can be when people are aware,” the DNCC mayor said at a press briefing in his Gulshan office, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

The Eid-ul-Azha saw Muslims all over the globe, including in Bangladesh, sacrificing animals as part of religious ritual.

In Dhaka, authorities had set up over 500 designated slaughter spots to put a curb on unplanned slaughtering. However, the directive was largely ignored.

Animal wastes were kept lying on the streets that spread malodour through the air. The wind was heavy with stench at some places even on the third day today.

“We fixed 48-hours timeframe to remove the wastes of the sacrificial animals but we have successfully done that in 27 hours,” Annisul said.

All staffs of the waste management department of the DNCC have put their tireless efforts to keep the city beautiful, he said.  

On the note of removing billboards, the mayor said the authorities concerned have been given until September 30 to remove them.

He warned the owners and sponsors of the billboards. “It is a punishable offence. We will fine you lakhs of money. We will be forced to take tougher actions”.
