Drug peddler killed in Jashore gunfight: Police
An alleged drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Sadar upazila of Jashore early today.
The deceased, Babu (40), was accused in 12 cases, including arms, explosive and drugs, filed with Kotwali police station, said Tasmim Alam, inspector (investigation) of the police station.
The inspector said a team of Kotwali Police Station launched a drive in Sarapole area around 2:00am after receiving information that a group of drug peddlers was gathering there for trading drugs.
Sensing the presence of the police team, the drug peddlers including babu opened fire on the law enforcers, promoting them to fire back in self-defense.
Babu suffered injuries with bullets in the gunfight while others managed to flee the scene, said the police official.
The injured man was taken to Jashore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead, said the inspector.
Mohammad Swapon, a physician of the hospital, told our Benapole correspondent that the man, who received bullets in his head, had died before he was taken to the hospital.
Two policemen were also injured in the gun battle and they were admitted to a police hospital, claimed the police official.
Inspector Tasmim further said they recovered a one shooter gun, 200 yaba tablets and 54 bottles of phensidyl from the spot.
