Fire at Gazipur RMG factory
Over eight hours after a fire broke out at a ready-made garment factory in Gazipur, 14 firefighting units were still continuing their hectic efforts in bringing the blaze under control.
The fire was originated at the warehouse on the third floor of the seven-storey Dignity Textile Limited building in Betjuri area of Sreepur upazila around 2:15pm and engulfed the whole floor.
The fire could not be doused till filling this report around 10:15pm, reports our Gazipur correspondent.
On information, 14 units of firefighters from Tongi, Mawna, Joydebpur, Kaliakoir and Bhaluka of Mymensingh rushed to the spot, said Akhtaruzzaman Liton, deputy assistant director of Gazipur fire station.
The building is made of metals like iron and steel, Liton said, adding that the efforts to douse the fire using water are not working accordingly.
He expressed his fear that “the building might collapse” due to a prolonged fire in such an iron-made infrastructure.
Huge amount of thread, cotton, clothes and others equipments were gutted in the fire, Liton informed.
The cause of the fire and extent of damage could not be known immediately. It is suspected that the fire originated from an electric short circuit.
Administrative Manager of the factory Nazmun Nahar Kemu said, “The machines and other equipments on the third floor have been completely burnt in the fire.”
No worker was reported to be injured in the incident, she added.
Meanwhile, the district administration has formed a five-member probe body, headed by the Sreepur upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), to investigate the cause of delay in dousing the fire.
Factory sources said it is a complete composite factory owned by Deel Hue, a Mauritius citizen.
Some 3000 workers are working here in different units included knitting, dyeing, cutting and finishing section.
