Gaibandha school girl gang-raped, 3 held

Police arrested three people for reportedly gang-raping a ninth-grader in Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha last night.

One Sohag Mia, 23, son of local Jubo League leader Dudu Mia, and four of his associates waylaid the victim while she was returning home from nearby Naldanga bazaar last night, said Borhanuddin, officer-in-charge of Sadullapur Police Station.

Later, they dragged her to a nearby cane filed, where they “raped” the victim, our local correspondent reports quoting the police official.

Hearing screaming of the victim, locals rushed to the spot and rescued the victim and sent her to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital.

They also caught two “rapists” -- Shariful Islam, 23, and Babu Mia, 22, from the spot. Other alleged rapists—Sohag, Rubel Mia, 22, and Khushu Mia, 23, -- managed to flee the scene, he said.

Protesting the incident, the villagers ransacked the shop of Dudu Mia and picked up his son Sohag. Later, the agitating people handed over the trio to the law enforcers.

Abdul Halim, uncle of the victim, filed a rape case with Sadullapur Police Station against the five persons.

Borhanuddin, officer-in-charge of Sadullapur Police Station, told our correspondent that the arrestees primarily confessed their crime.

Police are trying to arrest the rest of the accused, he added.
