HC order on plea for staying polls Jan 3
The High Court today fixed January 3 next year for passing an order on a writ petition seeking stay on municipality elections slated for December 30.
The HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo set the date after finishing hearing on the petition,
The petition mentioned some technical mistakes in the election schedules under the Pourasava Election Rules, 2010 over allocating symbols to the candidates.
Meanwhile yesterday, the Election Commission (EC) has allocated election symbols to the candidates.
At today’s hearing, EC’s lawyer Touhidul Islam told the court that his client will send the rules to the law ministry for correcting the mistakes within a few days.
Supreme Court lawyer SM Zulfiqure Ali Junu on December 30 filed the petition with the HC seeking stay on holding the elections and on allocation of symbols to the candidates on the grounds of mistakes.
In the petition, he said there are some anomalies in the numbers in the schedules 2, 3, 4 and 5 announced under the Pourasava Election Rules, 2010, which were amended on November 23 this year.
AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon appeared for the petitioner.
