IGP’s comments indecent: NHRC chief
Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today termed “indecent” and “undesirable” the recent comments of the police chief regarding his fear of arrest trade.
“The IGP alleged that I have made the comments on police arrests being unaware of the whole issue,” Dr Mizanur Rahman told journalists today.
“Surely, the prime minister, being well aware and informed, gave her instruction not to harass any innocent people while law enforcers conduct their countrywide special drive against militants,” Rahman said after visiting the Dhaka Central Jail in Bakshi Bazar.
On June 12, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque at a meeting with eminent personalities in Chittagong criticised the NHRC chief for giving statement in the media expressing his fear of an arrest trade by police during the ongoing drives against militants.
Today, the NHRC chief also told journalists that there are many problems at Dhaka Central Jail including quality of food, shortage of living space for inmates and inadequate resources for training of female inmates.
He visited the jail following allegations of such problems.
The jail authorities assured him that the problems will be solved when the entire jail would be shifted to its new compound at Keraniganj, Rahman added.
