India greets Bangladesh on Independence Day

India extended greetings to Bangladesh on Independence Day expressing confidence that bilateral relations with Bangladesh will reach new heights, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Indian President Pranab Mukherjee said in a message to his Bangladeshi counterpart Md Abdul Hamid, that "on behalf of the government, the people of India and on my own behalf, it gives me immense pleasure to extend warm felicitations and best wishes to you and to the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of your National Day."

"The bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh have grown tremendously over the past few years. I am confident that this relationship between our two countries will continue to expand and that our interaction and cooperation will scale new heights", he added.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Modi today tweeted "Independence Day greetings to the people of Bangladesh. We cherish our long-standing ties & am sure our relations will grow even further."

The Bangladesh High Commission celebrated the 45th anniversary of Bangladesh Independence and National Day High Commission in New Delhi with a programme.

The day's programme began with hoisting of the national flag at the Chancery by High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali and a special prayer (munazat) were offered for peace and salvation for the martyrs of Independence.  

Messages by President Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister A H Mahmud Ali and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shariar Alam were read out on the occasion.

To mark the national and Independence Day of Bangladesh, special supplements were published in three Indian leading newspapers The Indian Express; The Financial Express and Anandabazaar Patrika.
