Long tailback on Dhaka-Tangail highway
A 65 kilometer long tailback ensued on the Dhaka-Tangail highway this morning as holidaymakers make their return journey after Eid.
The tailback developed last night from Chandra intersection of Gazipur and stretched to Mirzapur of Tangail, our Tangail correspondent reports.
Today morning, the tailback grew and extended until Bangabandhu bridge, Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Gorai highway police station, said.
“We are trying very hard to keep the vehicles moving in both directions. But, the problem is the number of vehicles is double the capacity of this two-lane highway,” he said.
Kamruzzaman Raj, a sub-inspector of Elenga Highway Police, told The Daily Star that hundreds of vehicles queued at the Bangabandhu bridge started moving at snail’s pace this morning.
Meanwhile, a lot of people, mostly readymade garment workers, are travelling on the roofs of the buses and trucks. They have been suffering the most because of rain.
