CU teacher Maidul freed 20 days after securing bail
Twenty days after securing bail from the High Court, Chittagong University (CU) teacher Maidul Islam, who was sent to jail in an ICT case, walked out of Chattogram Central Jail yesterday as his bail order was mistakenly sent to another court.
The HC granted him bail on October 9.
Maidul, an assistant professor of sociology, got released after his bail documents reached the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on Monday, said his lawyer Advocate Bhulan Lal Bhowmick.
“Though the order was supposed to be sent to this court, it mistakenly reached the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court,” he said.
After realising the mistake, the court resent the bail order to the HC, and later it was sent to the judicial magistrate's court, the lawyer added.
On October 9, a Chattogram court postponed Maidul's three-day remand after he secured bail from the HC for six months in the case filed against him on July 24 under section 57 of the ICT Act for “making defamatory remarks against the prime minister on social media”.
A former executive member of BCL's CU unit filed the case with Hathazari Police Station. Maidul was sent to jail on September 24.
