Myanmar envoy summoned over firing at BGB men

The government today summoned the Myanmar ambassador in Dhaka to protest firing by Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) on the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) personnel and detaining of a BGB soldier.

While handing over a strongly worded one-page note verbal to Ambassador Myo Myint Than, Additional Foreign Secretary Mizanur Rahman asked the Myanmar envoy to immediately send back BGB Nayek Abdur Razzak, who was abducted with his firearm by the Myanmar troops.

Another BGB man, Biplob Kumar, received bullet injuries when the BGP opened fire on a BGB petrol boat on Naf River in Cox’s Bazar.

Myo Myint Than was summoned less than two weeks back on June 5 over a Rakhine state minister’s comment at a Naypyidaw diplomatic briefing on Bangladeshis illegal migration issue.

The foreign ministry expressed deep anguish as the Myanmar authorities have not responded to the BGB call for holding a flag meeting.

In response, the ambassador informed the additional foreign secretary that the Myanmar border guards were busy with a ceremony and thus the flag meeting may be delayed.

At this stage, the foreign ministry official asked the envoy to convey the message to the Myanmar authorities concerned for holding the flag meeting immediately and return the BGB staff without any delay.

The official also asked the ambassador not to link the flag meeting with the ceremony because it is entirely a separate and most urgent issue.
