23 cases filed against illegal travel agents in Sylhet

9 held; drives to continue, says district admin

Sylhet District Administration today filed 23 cases against illegal travel agents in Sylhet under Overseas Employment and Migration Act 2013.

In a statement today, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment said district magistrates will from now on conduct mobile courts to punish those involved in illegal activities related to migration.

During the drives today at Bandarbazar, Zindabazar, Jallarpar, Amberkhana and Uposhohor areas, executive magistrates arrested nine illegal travel agents and jailed them for different terms and fined Tk 4,75,000, said Nasir Ullah Khan, additional district magistrate in Sylhet.

He told The Daily Star such drives will continue.

On Friday, at least 37 Bangladeshis migrants died in a boat capsize off the Tunisian coast on their way from to Italy from Libya.

Enamul Haque, travel agent who arranged the travel of several victims in the boat capsize, locked his office New Yeahia Overseas in Sylhet city and is absconding.
