‘Drug peddler’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’
A suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early today.
Deceased Md Ibrahim, son of Nurul Amin of Mistri Para area, was a top-listed yaba peddler and criminal, our Cox’s Bazar staff correspondent reports quoting Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station.
Ibrahim, also an accused in several cases, was arrested last night, the OC said.
Based on information provided by him during interrogation, a police team conducted a drive in Shahporir Dwip Jhaubon area around 11:30pm last night along with Ibrahim, he said.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, his cohorts opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the “gunfight”, OC Pradip said.
Ibrahim sustained bullet injuries during the gun battle while he was trying to flee the scene, the police official also said.
He was later taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered three locally-made LGs, 11 rounds of shotgun cartridges, 13 cartridge shells and 5,000 pieces of yaba pills from the spot.
The body of the deceased was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy and two separate cases were filed in connection with the incident.
