Gunfight with Cops: 'Yaba trader' killed in Teknaf

A man was killed in a so-called gunfight at Teknaf in Cox's Bazar early yesterday.

Police claimed the victim, Farid Alam, 30, was a drug trader.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said around 2:00am, police were informed that two groups of yaba traders were engaged in a gunfight over the shares of a shipment of the contraband pills at South Lengurbil, known to be a “safe zone” for unloading contrabands.

As a police team approached the spot, the drug traders fled, leaving behind Farid's body, he said.

Police recovered two firearms and 10,000 yaba tablets from the spot, the OC said.

Police will continue the anti-drug drives until drug trafficking stops, he added.

At least 10 people have been killed in “gunfights” in Teknaf since Pradip took charge of the police station on October 20.

With Farid, at least 250 suspected drug peddlers and dealers have been killed since the anti-narcotics drive began on May 4. Most of them were killed in so-called shootouts.
