'Gunfight' again: One killed

A suspected drug trader was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Sadar upazila early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Sumon Mia, 40, son of Golam Mustafa alias Suruj Driver of Mymensingh city's Char Kalibari area.

On information that drug peddlers were selling drugs in Char Puliamari area, a team of Detective Branch of police raided the area around 12:45am, said Md Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge of DB, Mymensingh.

Sensing the presence of police, the drug dealers opened fire on them, forcing the detectives to retaliate. During the “gunfight” Sumon sustained bullet wounds, said the OC, adding, he was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The police seized 10 rounds of used bullets and four kilograms of hemp from the spot, he claimed.

Constables Ranaul Islam and Elias Miah were injured during the “gunfight” and received treatment at Mymensingh Police Lines Hospital.

Sumon was wanted in 10 cases related to narcotics, theft and robbery filed with Kotwali police, the OC said. His body was sent to MMCH morgue for autopsy and a case was filed with Kotwali police.

FAMILY VERSION

Sumon's eldest daughter Sumi Akhter said someone called her father over cellphone around 8:30pm on Tuesday. They did not have any information about his whereabouts anymore.

In the morning, they heard the news of her father's death and rushed to MMCH morgue to identify him, she added.

Sumon, father of three children and a former grocer, was allegedly involved in selling and using drugs, said locals.

Family members and relatives demanded a neutral investigation into the killing, but the police denied picking up Sumon.
