Ex-Sonagazi OC suspended
Former officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain has been suspended for his negligence in duty over Nusrat murder.
Police authorities suspended Moazzem yesterday and attached him with the office of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police (Rangpur Range), said Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general (AIG) of police headquarters. “Departmental steps are underway against him,” he told The Daily Star.
The decision was taken based on the report submitted by the probe committee formed by the police headquarters to investigate killing of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi. The probe committee included Deputy Inspector General (HR) of SM Ruhul Amin and Mohammad Abu Suffiun, additional SP of Police Headquarter.
The charges against him are violating departmental discipline, tarnishing the image of police and inappropriate behavior, police headquarters sources said.
While being in suspension, he will not be on any kind of police duty and will receive only the half of the basic salary.
Earlier, Moazzem Hossain was withdrawn from the police station and was attached to the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) on April 10 over Nusrat’s death.
WHAT HAPPENED TO NUSRAT?
Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, was set ablaze on April 6 allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against the principal for sexually harassing her late last month.
After fighting for her life for five days, Nusrat succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital on April 10.
Only a few minutes before the Alim exams on April 6, four unidentified people allegedly took Nusrat to the roof of the three-storey administrative building of the madrasa saying one of her friends was being assaulted there, victim's brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman had told The daily Star earlier.
