Flood situation static as rivers flowing above danger marks

The flood situation in Gaibandha, Jamalpur and Bogra districts remained static as the rivers are still flowing above the danger marks.

The rivers Brahmaputra and Ghagot were flowing 54 and 60 centimetres above the danger marks yesterday, engulfing a vast tract of cropland and a number of homesteads in seven upazilas of Gaibandha, reports our correspondent.

The upazilas are Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari, Saghata, Gobindaganj, Palashbari and Sadullapur, said local Water Development Board (WDB) sources.

A bridge on Sadullapur-Damoderpur road faces threat of collapse, as surging water hit its pillars and approach roads.

With increase of water level, Gaibandha-Laxmipur road went under water, suspending all vehicular movement on this road.

The food-hit people are facing acute crisis of food and pure drinking water, said locals.

Meanwhile, erosion by the River Jamuna eroded Gobindapur Dakhil Madrasa in Saghata upazila, said Ataur Rahman, superintendent of the madrasa.

In Jamalpur, the situation in the district was improving slightly as floodwater is some areas started receding, reports our correspondent.

However, the Jamuna was flowing 63 cm above the danger mark at Bahadurabad Ghat point yesterday, leaving over 2.50 lakh people marooned in seven upazilas, said WDB sources.

The upazilas include Dewanganj, Madarganj, Melandah, Bakshiganj, Sadar and Sarishabari. 

The district administration has distributed 239 tonnes of rice and Tk 5.47 lakh among the marooned people.

According to our Bogra correspondent, water levels of Jamuna and Bangalee rivers were rising, inundating around 150 villages in five upazilas in the district in the last six days.

According to WDB, the Jamuna and Bangalee were flowing 77 and 48 cm above the danger marks in the last 24 hours.

The flood victims are suffering due to acute crisis of food, medicine, drinking water and shelter.
