Man dies of dengue at MMCH

A man died of dengue while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) on Sunday evening.

The deceased was identified as Russel Mia, 35, son of Monju Mia of Chartik village under Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj, said Dr AB Md Shamsuzzaman, assistant director of MMCH.

Russel died of dengue fever at the hospital around 6.00pm, he told our Mymensingh corrspondent.

Students, officegoers most vulnerable

Russel, who came home on Eid vacation from Dhaka, had been suffering from fever and was admitted at Kishoreganj General Hospital where he was diagnosed with dengue, said Dr Sultana Razia, deputy director of Kishoreganj General Hospital.

After being treated at the hospital for two days, he was shifted to MMCH around 2.45pm on Sunday afternoon as his condition deteriorated, Dr Razia added.

A total of 189 dengue patients are now being treated at MMCH, including 35 patients who got admitted to the hospital in the last 24 hours till 8.00am on Sunday, said Dr Laxmi Narayan Majumder, deputy director of MMCH.

A total of 1,014 dengue patients have so far been treated at the hospital, including the patients admitted at present, since July 21, the MMCH deputy director added.

Meanwhile, a total of 132 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in kishoreganj district including 35 new patients in last 24 hours, said Kishoreganj Civil Surgeon Dr Md Habibur Rahman.

A total of 813 dengue patients have been treated in Kishoreganj so far, said the civil surgeon.

Earlier, a college student died of dengue at MMCH on August 11.

This year’s dengue outbreak is already the worst in the country, with at least 51,476 cases detected and at least 98 dead so far.

However, the official figure of death toll is 40.

The number of reported infections is five times that of last year. The actual figures are likely to be higher as many cases go unreported.
