Man dies in Jamalpur police custody

Hours into his arrest, an alleged drug peddler died last night in police custody at a hospital in Sadar upazila of Jamalpur.

Sohel Rana, 32, son of Rehan Ali of Pahari Patal village under Fulkocha union in Melandaha upazila of Jamalpur, died at Jamalpur General Hospital on Sunday around 8:45pm, reports our Jamalpur correspondent quoting police.

Meanwhile, Rana's family alleged that he might have been tortured to death by police.

Rana's father, uncle Abdul Malek and brother Md Giasuddin told local reporters that they were taking preparation to lodge a murder case with the local police station.

Rana became sick at the police station around 7:30pm, said Mazharul Karim, officer-in-charge (OC) of the Sadar Police Station, adding that the arrestee was first taken to Melandaha Upazila Health Complex.

But, as his condition deteriorated, he was taken to the Jamalpur General Hospital, the OC said.

Rana was arrested along with 25 pieces of yaba tablets and five grammes of heroin around 5:00pm on Sunday, the police official added.

"The inquest report prepared by the executive magistrate revealed that there was no injury mark on the body," the OC also said, adding that the body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
