Man killed for protesting verbal abuse on rape victim

A man was stabbed dead and another injured in Moulvibazar’s Sreemangal upazila for protesting verbal abuse hurled towards a rape victim.

The deceased is uncle to a nine-year-old girl who was raped recently. The other injured is the father of the victim, our local correspondent reports.

According to what could be known, the nine-year-old was discharged from hospital last night and she was being accompanied on her way home by the father and uncle.

The uncle is the plaintiff in a rape case filed over the incident. One Jamal Mia, who has already been arrested in this regard, has been accused in it.

One Ahad Ali hurled verbal abuse to the rape victim at Choumohona Road around 10:00pm, said Sohel Rana, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sreemangal Police Station.

As the father and the uncle protested such remarks, Ahad Ali stabbed them indiscriminately, killing the uncle on the spot, and fled the scene, the OC said.

Father of the victim is attending treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said Polash Roy, medical officer at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital.

Sreemangal police has announced Tk 50,000 bounty for capture of Ahad Ali, Nazrul Islam, an officer-in-charge of Srimangal Police Station told The Daily Star.

It is yet to be known whether Ahad Ali is connected to Jamal Mia, the rape accused.

In an update, police claimed arrest of Ahad today, OC said Sohel Rana added.
