Nusrat murder: Ruhul Amin remanded

A Feni court today placed Sonagazi upazila unit Awami League President Ruhul Amin on five-day remand over his alleged involvement in the madrasa girl Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Shoraf Uddin Ahmed passed the order after investigation officer in the case Inspector Shah Alam of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) produced Ruhul Amin before the court with a seven-day remand prayer, a correspondent reports.

Nusrat Murder: Key accused confesses role

No lawyer represented Ruhul Amin during the hearing today.

Earlier, a team of PBI, which has been tasked with investigating the gruesome killing of Nusrat, held Ruhul from Sonagazi municipality area yesterday afternoon.

Ruhul is also the vice-president of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa’s governing committee.

Ruhul’s name surfaced after a number of arrestees in this case gave confessional statements before the court.

Meanwhile, PBI today claimed to have arrested one of the “aides” in the murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

The arrestee Iftekhar Hossain Rana, 21, stood guard at the madrasa gate when Nusrat was set on fire, said Md Moyeen Uddin, additional superintendent of PBI (Chattogram range).

Rana was arrested from a quarter of T&T Residential area in Rangamati Sadar early today, he told The Daily Star.

He went into hiding there immediately after the incident, the PBI official said, adding that Rana’s name surfaced after the interrogations of other accused although his name was not mentioned in the case.

Rana will be produced before a Feni court tomorrow, he also said.

Madrasa student and Alim examinee Nusrat lost her battle for life, five days after she was set afire on April 6 -- an incident that sparked outrage all over the country.

A group of five people poured kerosene on the 18-year-old girl and set her afire allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case against the principal of the madrasa, Siraj Ud Dowla, over sexual assault on her late last month.
