Robber gang leader killed in Sundarbans
An alleged leader of a robber gang was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Hongshu Rajerchar area of the Sundarbans early yesterday.
The deceased, Hasan Ali Sana, 32, son of Alim Sana, was the second-in-command of infamous Ranga Bahini, police said.
Acting on a tip-off, law enforcers conducted a drive in Dabura area of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira on Wednesday night and arrested Sana.
He was handed over to Koyra police around 11:00pm.
After gleaning information from Sana, a police team taking him along with them launched a drive in Hongshu Rajerchar area around 2:00am to recover arms.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Sana's cohorts opened fire in a bid to snatch him, forcing the police members to retaliate by firing.
The gunfight left Sana, a resident of no 4 Koyra village in Koyra upazila, critically injured by bullets.
He was rushed to Koyra Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight. Police recovered three shutter guns and 10 cartridges from the spot.
Harendranath Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Koyra Police Station, confirmed the incident.
Sana was wanted in robbery cases filed with different police stations, the OC added.
The body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
