Suspected robber killed in 'gunfight'

A suspected robber was killed in a “gunfight” with police on Jashore-Chougaccha road in Dogachia Bazar area early yesterday.

The dead is Selim, 40, of Jashore Sadar upazila. He was accused in a dozen cases.

Tipped off that two groups of “robbers” were exchanging bullets among them, a team of Detective Brach of police conducted a drive in the area around 3:30am, said Maniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of DB police.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the “robbers” opened fire on them forcing the DB men to fire retaliatory shots.

At one stage, police recovered Selim's bullet-hit body and took it to the morgue of Jashore Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

Police claimed to have recovered a gun, five bullets, three empty shells of bullets and some sharp weapons from the spot.
