SC okays compensation hearing for Jaha Alam

Supreme Court has cleared the way for hearing a rule on compensating Jaha Alam, the man wrongly imprisoned for three years because of an identity mix-up.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain today dismissed a stay petition on this rule filed by Anti-Corruption Commission.

Now, the High Court will fix a date for holding hearing on the rule, Advocate Amit Dasgupta, the lawyer who moved for the suomoto rule, told The Daily Star.

Advocate AM Amin Uddin appeared for Jaha Alam at court. Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan argued for the state-run Anti-Corruption Commission.

Jute mill worker Jaha Alam was wrongly imprisoned for three years because of an identity mess-up. He got released on February 4, a day after he was exonerated.

He was arrested in connection with cases filed by Anti-Corruption Commission for misappropriating Sonali Bank money.

Following a newspaper report, a High Court bench on January 28 issued the suomoto rule asking why Jaha Alam will not be compensated for his sufferings.
