Water transports all across the country may resume tomorrow after three days of halt due to rough weather under influence of cyclone Fani.

Alamgir Kabir, joint director for Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), told The Daily Star today it will depend on weather condition.

“With favourable weather conditions, services may resume tomorrow morning,” he said this afternoon. “But, we will not ply water transports today.”

After Fani reduced down to a depression today, it is still influencing rough tides in the river and raising gusts of winds – hazardous conditions for water transports.

“The river is rough today. We will not allow water vessels tonight,” he said.

Water transports countrywide were suspended last Thursday in advent of the very severe cyclonic storm Fani. It was causing rough tides on rivers and seas.

But the worst has passed and currently, the cyclone has reduced down to a depression and causing rainfall. It has passed north, away from Dhaka.

Maritime ports of Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower danger signal number seven but instead hoist local cautionary signal number three.

The Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar ports have also been advised to lower danger signal number six and four but instead hoist local cautionary signal number three.
