Rana Plaza volunteer sets himself on fire and dies
A youth is believed to have set himself on fire and died in Savar, at the outskirts of Dhaka city.
Deceased Nawshad Hasan Himu, 27, son of Abul Hossain from Barisal, was said to be a volunteer during Rana Plaza collapse in 2013.
According to police and friends, Himu set himself on fire last night, around 9:00pm, on the sixth anniversary of Rana Plaza disaster.
He was declared dead when rushed to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. His body was kept at the college morgue, last reported.
Savar Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Asgar Ali told The Daily Star that it was a case of suicide. “We are yet to ascertain the reason of death.”
He said, Himu “was a withdrawn-type person” who did not socialise much.
Soikat Mallick, former president of Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, told The Daily Star Himu was a member of his organisation.
“We worked as volunteers during Rana Plaza collapse. Since then, he has never been the same. He was traumatised by the incident,” he said.
