12 more killed, ‘war on drugs’ tally crosses 100

Twelve more are killed during the anti-narcotics crackdown, taking the tally of “war on drugs” to 108 in just a fortnight of raids conducted by law enforcers.

Our correspondents and agencies report, post-midnight incidents of “gunfights” and “internal clashes” took place through Dhaka, Comilla, Kushtia, Mymensingh, Satkhira, Thakurgaon, Jessore, Barguna and Brahmanbaria.

In Dhaka, suspected drug dealer Sumon Miah alias Khuku Sumon was killed in Dakkhin Khan around 12:10am, said Mizanur Rahman, senior assistant commissioner (Dakkhin Khan zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Police raided Kholamath area based on intelligence of a drug trading. "Sensing our presence, they opened fire, prompting police to retaliate with equal," the police officer said.

After the gunfight, the body of Sumon was found at the spot. One shooter gun, 2 rounds of bullets, 1000 pieces yaba pills were recovered. Two policemen were also said to be injured.

Police claimed, Sumon is a top drug dealer. He is an accused in five cases filed with Dakkhinkhan Police Station.

In Comilla, Liton alias Kana Liton, 43, and Baten, 34, were killed in Gunjar area of Muradnagar around 12:30am, said AKM Manjur Alam, officer-in-charge of Muradnagar Police Station.

Police recovered a pipe-gun and 400 bottles of phensidyl from the spot. Three policemen were also said to have been injured in the incident. Liton stood accused in seven cases and Baten in eight, the police official said.

In Kushtia, Mukaddes Ali, 42, and Fazlur Rahman alias Title, 48, were killed in Shehala field area of Daulatpur upazila around 2:30am, said Sabbirul Amin, OC of Detective Branch. Both were accused in eight drug-related cases each filed with Daulatpur Police Station.

Police claimed, Sumon is one of the top drug dealers. Five cases were filed against him with Dakkhinkhan Police Station.

In Mymensingh, Mizan, 45, was killed in Bhaluka upazila around 2:10am, UNB reports quoting Ashiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch. 100gm heroin, three bullet shells and a machete from the spot.

Mizan was accused in nine cases including drug and robbery, he added. Meanwhile, two policemen were also injured during the “gunfight”.

In Satkhira, Anisur Rahman, 40, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Pilapul field under Deyara union, Koloroa upazila, around 2:00am, Biplab Kumar Nath, OC of Koloroa Police Station, said.

Anisur was accused in 10 cases and a listed Yaba trader. Police recovered a one-shooter gun, two round bullets and 70 yaba tablets from his possession.

However, deceased's wife Nazma Begum claimed that a team of plain clothes police detained her husband on Monday morning. She hasn’t seen her husband since.

In Thakurgaon, Harun, 45, was killed in Shitolpur area of Haripur upazila, UNB reports quoting Ruhul Kuddus, OC of Haripur Police Station. Harun was said to be accused in several cases filed with the police station.

In Jessore, two suspected drug traders were killed in a “gunfight between two rival groups of drug traders” in Chanchra Raipara area of the district town around 3:00am.

Being informed, a team of police went to the spot and recovered the bullet-riddle bodies, UNB reports quoting Sub-Inspector Manjurul of Kotwali Police Station.

They also recovered two pistols, five round bullet shells and two packets of yaba tablet.

In Barguna, Firoz Mridha, 45, and accused in nine cases, was killed in Kumrakhali village in Kajirabad union, Betagi municipality, around 4:30 am, UNB reports.

Mammunur Rashid, OC of Betagi Police Station, said a revolver, a shooter gun, four bullets and 240 Yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.

In Brahmanbaria, Jony Mia, 30, an accused in eight cases, was killed in “gunfight between two groups of drug traders” in Khalajora area of Akhaura municipality around 2:00am.

On information, police recovered the body, a pipe gun, a cartridge and sharp weapons from the spot, UNB reports quoting Mosharaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Akhaura Police Station.
