BNP nominations annulled in 3 seats
Nomination of all the BNP candidates have been annulled in at least three constituencies, which now do not have a BNP candidate nor one from Jatiya Oikyafront.
Election Commission disqualified BNP’s candidates from Bogura-7, Manikganj-2 and Dhaka-1, after scrutiny process ended this afternoon, last reported.
In Manikganj-2, candidacy of Mainul Islam Khan, general secretary of district BNP, and Abedur Rahman, incumbent chairman of Singair, were disqualified.
Our local correspondent reports, Mainul’s candidacy was revoked after returning officer suspected the authenticity of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s signature on his papers.
On the other hand, Abedur Rahman’s nomination was revoked as he has failed to resign from the position of Upazila parishad chairman in due time.
In Bogura-7, BNP nominated its Chairperson Khaleda Zia, now in prison, and Morshed Milton, chairman of Gabtoli upazila, as a backup plan.
The returning office scrapped Milton’s candidacy on a similar ground that he did not resign from the chairman position. Khaleda’s ineligibility was declared some time ago.
A dissident candidate, Sarkar Badal, incumbent chairman of Shahjahan upazila and also a member of the district unit of BNP, also lost his nomination on the chairman cause.
In Dhaka-1, BNP picked Khondokar Abu Ashfaq and Fahima Nasrin Jublee as its candidates. Further details on their annulment could not be ascertained immediately.
All the candidates told our local correspondents that they would seek legal support protesting the rejection of the candidatures.
Besides, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a letter, urged the Election Commission to issue directives to all the returning officers to accept his signature.
