‘Rohingya robber leader’ killed in ‘gunfight’ hours after arrest
A Rohingya man, who was an alleged ringleader of a robber gang, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar this morning.
Deceased Nur Mohammad, 34, came to the limelight after he held an earring ceremony of his daughter on August 22 and received one kilogramme of gold, Tk 45 lakh in cash and many other materials as gifts.
Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said they arrested Nur Mohammad from Shalbagan area in the hilly region of the upazila on Saturday afternoon.
A team led by OC (Investigation) ABMS Doha of the police station conducted a drive along with Nur to recover illegal firearms at Jadimura No 27 camp in Teknaf around 5:45am.
Nur’s associates and yaba peddlers fired on police and tried to snatch him, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate. The skirmish left Nur and three policemen injured.
Later, Nur was taken to the Upazila Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, OC Pradip Kumar added.
Police also recovered four LGs, a local gun, 18 bullets and 20 bullet shells from the spot.
