UP polls: Rangamati PCJSS’s blockade progresses demanding reelection
Parbatya Chhatragram Janasanghati Samity (PCJSS-Santu Larma) has been observing a 36-hour road and waterway blockade in Rangamati demanding re-election at a polling centre at Bhushanchhara union of Barkal upazila of the district.
The PCJSS enforced the blockade at 6:00am today, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.
During the blockade, shopkeepers in Banarupa, Rajbari, College Gate and Bhedbhedi areas kept their shutters closed. Vehicular movement of internal and long distance buses remains suspended since morning, the daily reported.
No incident of violence was reported, the daily reported at 10:55am quoting Md Sayeed Tariqul, superintendent of police in Rangamati.
The PCJSS have been demanding re-election of union parishad bringing allegation of vote rigging.
It claimed that a group of supporters of ruling Awami League with the help of Border Guard Bangladesh rigged votes and beat up hilly voters during the election at Chhoto Harina Government Primary School voting centre at Bhushanchhara, according to the Prothom Alo.
There are 49 union parishads in Rangamati where elections were held on June 4. The polls were held peacefully with reports of several incidents of violence. But PCJSS rejected polls held at the voting centre and demanded reelection there.
