Polls under EC ‘questionable’: Khokon
"We hope that the commission will hold the upcoming municipality polls in a free and fair manner this time to get rid of its previous stigma," he told reporters at the EC Secretariat this afternoon.
"The tenure of the incumbent Election Commission will expire around a year later. If they fail to hold the municipality polls in a free and fair manner, they (commissioners) will have to leave the office with the stigma," he said.
The incumbent election commissioners assumed the offices in February 2012 and their tenure will expire in February 2017.
He was talking to reporters after submitting an application of a BNP-nominated mayoral candidate of Chatkhil municipality of Noakhali, Mostafa Kamal who alleged that he was forced by the ruling party men to sign a paper claiming the withdrawal of his candidacy on Sunday.
Elections to 235 municipalities will be held on December 30.
