Quota: Students condemn ‘threats’, rally against BCL

Students moving against quota system in civil service today paraded against ruling party activists, demanding security of their activists at dormitories.

About a thousand pro-movement students marched from Dhaka University’s central library condemning “Chhatra League’s threats” to two of their leaders.

They alleged, Nurul Huq Nur and Rashed Khan, frontline leaders of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakhhan Parishad, were subjected to intimidation by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall last night.

“Chhatra League men led by central Vice President Imtiaz Bulbul Bappi, Mohsin hall’s Secretary Mehedi Hasan, and Institute of Fine Arts’ Secretary Fahimul Islam threatened us last night,” alleged Nurul Huq, a joint convener of the platform.

“We called the proctor and dialed the national helpline. But there was no response. The situation was later brought under control by Mohsin Hall’s provost,” he added.

“Do not think that the students are weak,” Nur warned the authorities. “If you play with the students, you will burn to ashes in the fire they can spread.”

Hasan Al Mamun, another joint convener of the platform, alleged: “Those who attacked us last night are all quota beneficiaries. They hacked our Facebook page.”

The students called out for immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits who were involved in threatening the leaders and demanded that the university authority give them security.

The students also went to Shahbagh Police Station to file a general dairy seeking security. Police allegedly denied to accept the complaint.
