Rajon murder: Cops to visit KSA to bring back Kamrul

A three-member police team is due to visit Kingdom of Saudi Arabia this month to bring back Kamrul Islam, the prime suspect in Rajon murder case.

The team, led by Additional Police Superintendent Mahbubul Karim of the police headquarters, is expected to bring Kamrul back with assistance from the Interpol, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.

Confirming it to The Daily Star, Additional Deputy Commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Rahmatullah, who is one of the members of the team, said: “Everything has been finalised. We are just waiting for an official order.”

The other member of the team is Assistant Police Superintendent AFM Nizam Uddin, he added.

Rahmatullah said all the formalities have been completed in this regard and all necessary documents sent to the Bangladesh embassy in Riyadh.

Md Samiul Alam Rajon, 13, was tortured to death by a group of brutes who were “punishing” him in Kumargaon Bus Stand area of Sylhet on July 8. Rajon’s “crime”, the accused claimed, was theft.

One of the accused filmed the brutal beating and shared it on social media, sparking outrage at home and abroad. Since then, different organisations have been demonstrating across Bangladesh, demanding the maximum punishment for the culprits for their heinous crime.

On August 16, police pressed charges against 13 people, including prime accused Kamrul Islam, for their involvement in the killing. A Sylhet court on September 22 framed charges against the accused.

Among the accused, 10 people have so far been arrested, while the others including Kamrul remained absconding.

Kamrul fled to Saudi Arabia soon after the incident. He was later detained by Saudi police.
