Knife-attack on fellow: RU students postpone protest till Oct 24
Rajshahi University students, who blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway protesting a knife attack on their fellows, postponed their demonstration till October 24 following assurance from the university authorities to ensure their safety on the campus.
Transport movement on the highway remained suspended for two hours following the demonstration, reports our Rajshahi University correspondent.
Firoz Anam, a first-year student of Economics Department, was stabbed allegedly by muggers on the campus last night, said Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam, also in-charge of RMCH Police outpost.
Firoz and his friend were standing in front of a photocopy store near the stadium when a few youths called him to a field near Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall around 7:45pm yesterday.
They then tried to snatch money and mobile phone of Firoz and his friend and at one stage, the alleged snatchers stabbed Firoz and ran away, the SI said.
Around 12:20pm today, students took to the streets and started demonstration in front of the university main gate around 12:20pm demanding safe campus, halting traffic movement.
Professor Md Lutfor Rahman, proctor of RU, visited the protesting students and assured them of action against the muggers and a safer campus.
The VC also ensued that no outsider will be allowed on campus.
Meanwhile, law enforcers claimed to have detained three people-- Rubel Hossain, Rifat Hossain Rakesh and Parvez—from Rajshahi in connection with the mugging and injuring Firoz, said Officer-in-Charge of Motihar Police Station Hafizur Rahman.
Soon after the incident, the students blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway for over six hours last night.
