'Robber' killed in Jhenidah 'gunfight'
An alleged robber was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Moheshpur upazila in Jhenidah early today.
The victim was identified as Nur Islam , 44, son of Abdul Mannan of Bannigopinathpur village under Chowgacha upazila in Jashore. He was a inter-district robber gang member, our Jhenidah correspondent reports quoting police.
A group of robbers were taking preparation at Purandapur village on Kotchand-Jibonnagar road by felling a tree across the road around 3:30am, Laskar Jaiadul Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Moheshpur Police Station.
On information police reached the spot. Sensing the presence of law enforcers the robbers opened fire at them, the OC said.
Police retaliated triggering the gunfight. Later the robber group fled the spot leaving a body lying on the ground, the police official added.
Police recovered a shutter gun, bullets, a saw, two cocktails, one machete and some rope from the spot.
The OC said that the deceased is an accused in one robbery and one drug related cases.
The body has been sent to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, he added.
