‘Robber’ killed in Laxmipur ‘gunfight’
An alleged robber was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Raipur upazila of Laxmipur early today.
The deceased is Alamgir Hossain, son of Tajul Islam.
Informed that a gang of robbers was taking preparation for committing robbery, a team of police launched a drive in Dakshin Raipur area, said Md Lokman Hossain, officer-in-charge of local police station.
Sensing presence of police, the gang members opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a “gunfight”.
Alamgir was caught in the line of fire and suffered bullet injuries, the OC said.
Later, he was rushed to Raipur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, he added.
Besides, five policemen, including sub-inspector Faruk Hossain and constables -- Safiqur Rahman, Towhidul Islam, Omar faruk and Dipok Chandra Saha, were injured in the incident.
Police also recovered an LG and three rounds of bullet from the scene.
Accused in seven robbery cases, Alamgir was an infamous robber in the upazila, added the OC.
In another incident, an alleged robber, Ershad Hossain, suffered bullet injuries in a reported gunfight between his gang and police in Dakshin Hamchadi area in Sadar upazila early in the morning.
The injured robber was admitted to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital.
Three policemen were also injured in the incident, said Abdullah Al Mamum, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
Police also recovered a pistol and two rounds of bullet from the spot.
