'Robber' killed in Moulvibazar 'gunfight'

An alleged robbers was killed during a “gunfight” with police in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar early today.

The deceased was identified as Islam Uddin alias Islam Ali, 45, son of Motsin Ali from Kamalganj upazila.

Deceased Islam was accused in more than 10 robbery cases filed with different police stations, Shamim Musa, officer-in-charge of Kulaura Police Station, told our correspondent.

A team of police raided the Paboi area of the upazila around 4:00am based on information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit a robbery there, Sub-inspector Jahurul Islam Talukder from Kulaura Police Station said.

But the robbers opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate which triggered the “gun battle”,  the police official said .

Islam, the leader of the gang, was hit by a bullet during the “gunfight” and died on the spot, he said.

All the other robbers, however, managed to flee the spot.

Police also recovered a local pistol, five rounds of bullets and five machetes from the spot.
