The playground of Ijuddin Matabbor Kandi Government Primary School in Dikrirchar union of Faridpur Sadar upazila remains under rainwater for almost half of the year.

The school was established in 1976 on 51 decimals of land. Now there are 597 students and 14 teachers at the school.

During a visit on Wednesday, it was found that students were standing on the veranda of the school during a recess while some geese were swimming and bathing in the flooded school ground.

“We pass our off period idly as we cannot play on our school ground. Our school ground looks like a pond during the rainy season,” said Hridoy Sheikh, a Class V student of the school.

“Waterlogging occurs even after a slight rain. Due to inundation of the school ground for almost half of the year, we cannot even move freely on the compound,” said Sathi Akter, another Class V student.

“The school ground remains submerged from June to December every year. This situation has been prevailing for the last 10 years due to unplanned construction of roads and houses around the school, which prevents drainage of rainwater,” said Aisha Siddika, assistant teacher of the school.

“We arranged earth-filling of the school ground, but the soil was washed away by water during the rains,” she said.

Shiv Pado Dey, district primary education officer, said, “We know about the situation, but no step could be taken due to lack of fund for the purpose.”
