TIB urges govt to take effective steps against corruption
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) today called upon the government, political leaders and members of the civic society to initiate effective and long term steps to uproot corruption from the society.
During TIB’s annual meeting held at its Dhanmondi office in Dhaka today, TIB members opined that it is possible to raise awareness among the people against corruption if the TIB and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) work together.
TIB Trustee M Hafiz Uddin Khan told the meeting, “People’s expectation from the TIB is high…we have to take forward the social movement against corruption by involving the young generation in it.”
TIB also expressed grave concern over the country’s prevailing crisis of democracy, forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
The organisation expressed shock over the recently held three city corporation elections, holding the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies responsible for their failure to arrange the polls in a free, fair and credible manner.
It also asked the government to be more proactive to scrap the scopes of whitening black money and to bring back the money plundered abroad.
The country’s good governance and democratic progress were hindered due to the political crisis that became acute in March, TIB said.
TIB trustee board members M Hafiz Uddin Khan attended the meeting as the chief guest with its member Major General (retd) Imaamuzzaman in the chair.
