Members from Bangladesh Forest Department and Wild Team, a conservation organisation, today jointly started a two-month census of the endangered tiger population in the Sundarbans.

The census is going to be conducted in the Sundarbans' East Range and Sundarbans West Range, the largest natural tiger habitat in the country.

The team comprising of 56 officials, will set up about 478 camera traps to track the number of tigers in Sundarbans, said Modinatul Ahsan of Wildlife Crime Control Unit.

The forest department team conducted a separate census in Shatkhira last year to find out the number of tigers in the area.

The data which will be collected from the research is going to be submitted next year for further study on the endangered species, he added.
