Tureen Afroz files GD after getting threats
Tureen Afroz, a prosecutor of International Crimes Tribunal, today filed a general dairy seeking “necessary action” after she received a letter, where the anonymous sender attacked her with abusive words for placing arguments in a contempt case.
She filed the GD with the Banani Police Station around 4:30pm, police confirmed. However, both the police and Tureen Afroz declined to elaborate the content of the general diary.
Tureen Afroz, a teacher of Brac University who is now working as a prosecutor after taking leave, told The Daily Star today that she got the by-post letter around 2:00pm Wednesday when she went to the university. "Sending such letter is nothing but issuing threats."
Tureen said she informed the matter to the tribunal concerned and top officials of law enforcement agencies and also talked to senior prosecutors before filing the GD.
"Tureen Afroz, you have placed arguments against Anu Muhammad and others before the second tribunal yesterday,” reads the first sentence of the letter dated May 12 at the beginning of the letter.
"Those [who are facing contempt charge] are the 'cream' of the country and you are not even comparable to the dust of the foot of Anu Muhammad and Zafrullah [Chowdhury]," read the letter.
The other content of the letter is beyond publishable as it was full of slangs, attacking the prosecutor personally.
On May 11, Tureen Afroz placed her arguments during contempt proceeding at International Crimes Tribunal-2 against 23 eminent citizens including Anu Muhammad and Zafrullah for their statement criticising a tribunal sentence.
Coincidently, the tribunal on Wednesday punished Zafrullah for contempt of court as he did the offence twice. He served one hour imprisonment at the tribunal dock and was fined Tk 5,000, payable in seven days. In default, he will have to spend a month in jail.
Anu Muhammad and 21 others were pardoned as they “were not well aware of the consequence of their action” and as they regretted that which they had committed for the first time.
