The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) today extended the period of full waiver on the storage rent of import laden containers till May 16.

In a circular issued by the office of CPA Director (traffic), the authority announced the waiving of store rent fully for import containers that arrived since the countrywide shutdown.

The waiver would be applicable on condition of taking delivery of those containers within the extended period.

The waiver will also be applicable for import containers that arrived at the port four days before the shutdown started due to the coronavirus outbreak, the circular stated.

This is for the third time the port authority has offered such benefits for the importers in the last month in an attempt to reduce the acute container congestion due to poor delivery amidst the countrywide shutdown.

CPA Chairman Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad told The Daily Star that they have extended the period in line with government decisions.

He, however, warned that it will not be extended further beyond May 16, if the importers do not accelerate delivery by the period.

The CPA announced the waiver for the first time on April 4.
