7-day Biju Mela kicks off in Rangamati

In anticipation of the Biju-Sangrai-Boishu-Bishu-Bihu festival, a key cultural celebration for the indigenous communities of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the seven-day Biju Fair has commenced in Rangamati.

The event, organised jointly by the Cultural Institute of Indigenous Communities, Rangamati Hill District Council, and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, began today on the premises of the Cultural Institute.

Major General (retd) Anup Kumar Chakma, chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board, inaugurated the fair.

This was followed by a painting competition and a discussion session.

The discussion, chaired by Kajal Talukder, chairman of the Rangamati Hill District Council, featured Anup Chakma as the chief guest. Special guests included Brig Gen Mohammad Nazmul Haque, commander of Rangamati Region; Mohammad Habib Ullah, deputy commissioner of Rangamati; and SM Farhad Hossain, superintendent of Rangamati police.

During his address, Anup Chakma described the festival as a vibrant representation of the spirit of the hill people, expressing hopes for peace and prosperity in the coming year.

DC Habib Ullah emphasised the festival's role in showcasing the diverse cultures of Bangladesh to the world. Kajal Talukder highlighted the importance of preserving tradition and cultural heritage through events like the Biju Fair.

The opening day concluded with performances of traditional dances by artists from various communities, including Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Tanchangya, and Pangkhua.

The fair, running from April 3 to April 9, features 180 stalls offering traditional clothing, food, and ornaments, showcasing the rich heritage of the hill communities.

The main celebrations of the Biju festival are scheduled from April 12 to April 14, marking the transition to the New Year.

The festival is expected to bring a festive atmosphere to villages and neighborhoods across the three hill districts.
