Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, a literary haven for readers across Bangladesh, has announced the temporary cessation of its mobile library operations, effective December 31, 2024. With a fleet of 76 book-carrying mobile libraries, the non-profit organisation has served 5 lakh readers across the country, operating across 3200 areas, for over 25 years.

In an official notice issued by Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, it was announced that the books and assets of the mobile library belong to the institution but managing the manpower and financial resources to operate the library proved to be challenging. For the past two terms, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the previous government led by Bangladesh Awami League provided substantial funding for BSK's mobile libraries. On December 31, the third term concludes.

This announcement has been met with protests in the form of hunger strikes by readers and workers of BSK.

The Interim Government has, however, expressed its interest in providing further financial support for the next two terms, allowing Bishwo Shahitto Kendro to resume its operations in the future. Additionally, complying with demands by protesting workers and readers, the mobile libraries will resume operating, serving readers again from February 1, 2025.

As readers eagerly await the return of their beloved mobile libraries, this temporary closure reminds us of the vital role Bishwo Shahitto Kendro has played in shaping the reading habits of millions across the nation over the years.
