Death of newborn in Bagerhat: father remanded for 3 days
A Bagerhat court granted three-day remand for a man arrested for allegedly stealing and killing his newborn daughter in Morrelganj upazila.
Judge Samir Mallick of Bagerhat Senior Judicial Magistrate-2 Court passed the order today. The police had applied for a seven-day remand for the father, Sujan Khan.
Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Pankaj Chandra Roy confirmed the matter to our local correspondent.
Sujan was arrested on November 19, a day after his daughter's body was recovered, on suspicion of being involved in her abduction and murder, the SP said, adding that "we will interrogate on the basis of the information received."
He also said that DNA samples of Sujan's younger brother Ripon Khan (25) and brother-in-law Hasib Sheikh (30) were sent to Dhaka for test as part of the investigation.
The 17-day-old Sohana was sleeping between her father Sujan Khan and mother Shanta Akter in Gabtala village of Morrelganj on the night of November 15. After waking up past midnight, the parents allegedly found their daughter missing. The next day, the child's grandfather Ali Hossain Khan filed a case with Morrelganj Police Station in this regard.
Police launched a drive to rescue the child, but could not find her.
The grandfather saw Sohana's body floating in a pond in front of his house on the morning of November 18.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
On November 19, Morrelganj police handed Sujan over to the court and the judge ordered to send him to jail.
