DNCC looking to widen municipality tax net
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will start a "combing operation" to increase its tax net from September 1, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said at a city corporation meeting in Nagar Bhaban today.
DNCC will carry out the drive in zone-2 and -5, before gradually targeting all the wards under it.
"The main aim of the combing operation is to increase the tax net through bringing the holdings or institutions, which were dropped earlier, under tax. It will also increase the involvement of councillors in the activities of revenue section," said Atique at the programme.
This drive will also ensure the transparency and accountability of the work of revenue collection and encourage city dwellers to provide municipality taxes, he said.
The drive will identify those businesses without valid licences and bring them under the legal system.
A six-member committee headed by the local councillor and woman councillor of the reserved seat will be formed in each ward where the woman councillor will be joint convener and the deputy revenue officer of DNCC will play be the member secretary.
"All the residents of DNCC will be able to pay taxes online from January 1. No one needs to go to the zone office," said the Mayor Atiqul at the meeting held to discuss the issue.
He said they will be able to increase civic facilities when they get more taxes.
Among others, chief executive officer of DNCC Md Abdul Hai, secretary Rabindra Sri Barua and chief revenue officer Abdul Hamid Mia were present at the meeting.
