Don't harass MP Rana
The High Court has directed law enforcers not to harass or arrest Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, lawmaker from Tangail-3 constituency, without “due process of law”.
The HC passed the order on Wednesday after hearing a writ petition filed by Rana who fears police arresting him in the Faruk Ahmed murder case without “due process of law”.
The Bangla daily Prothom Alo on September 14 published a report saying that police have found evidence of involvement of Rana and his three brothers in the murder of Faruk Ahmed, Tangail district Awami League leader.
Faruk's bullet-hit body was recovered on January 18 last year, according to the report.
Deputy Attorney General Mokhlesur Rahman told The Daily Star that the HC bench passed the order “on special circumstances considering his status of lawmaker”.
Samarendranath Bishwas, the assistant attorney general, opposed the writ petition on grounds that the Supreme Court earlier discouraged the HC from passing such kinds of order.
Mokhlesur said the HC was aware of the SC ruling, but it passed the order for Amanur saying that the order would not be considered a precedent.
In an order on April 20 this year, a three-member bench of the SC said, “We want to make it clear that the High Court cannot issue any such directive (not to arrest or harass anyone).”
