Jung Kook makes VMA history
At the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, the spotlight shone brightly on Taylor Swift, who clinched a remarkable nine awards. However, amidst her dominance, other artists etched their names into VMA history.
Jung Kook and rapper Latto emerged victorious in the Song of the Summer category with their collaborative track "Seven." Jung Kook's triumph marked a groundbreaking moment as he became only the second South Korean solo artist to secure a coveted VMA.
The first solo artist hailing from South Korea to snag a VMA was Lisa, a member of the renowned group Blackpink. Her victory came in 2022, when she clinched the Best K-Pop award for her music video "Lalisa." Notably, Jung Kook added another layer to his achievement by becoming the first male soloist to secure a VMA.
What amplifies Jung Kook's feat is that he is the inaugural K-pop solo artist to win a VMA in a category that transcends the confines of the genre. Lisa's win, in contrast, was in the Best K-Pop category, explicitly designed for K-pop-associated artists. Conversely, Jung Kook faced off against a diverse array of performers spanning various musical genres.
The Song of the Summer category initially featured 16 contenders, whittling down the list until Jung Kook and Latto emerged as the winners. Their victory involved surpassing industry heavyweights such as Olivia Rodrigo, Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, and Taylor Swift, among others.
